What is veganism?
In its simplest form, a vegan is someone who lives their life without using animal products.
This means eating a 100% plant-based diet, therefore abstaining from any meats, dairy, eggs and honey. Veganism also means avoiding other animal products, such as leather, wool and silk. I also believe a vegan doesn't partake in any other form of animal exploitation - such as wearing make-up tested on animals, and various forms of entertainment.
Why vegan?
There are many different reasons that people go vegan. I myself became a vegan due to ethics and animal rights, however I am also a vegan for the environment and my health. I like to tell people "I came for the animals - but stayed for the health and environmental benefits". Not to mention it's a lot cheaper and I've been a student for the past three thousand years. I've been a vegan for almost three years now (I was vegetarian for a few years prior to this) and I can honestly say I can't think of a single reason NOT to go vegan!
If you don't quite understand why someone would be vegan or what the point is, I recommend these resources which I found great when I was unsure about veganism:

I also recommend Cowspiracy which is on Netflix!
